Patient Information

The JewelACL is a polyester permanent implant for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction and can be used with or without an additional tissue graft in ACL reconstruction procedures.

Unique advantages of the JewelACL

Strength

The JewelACL can be used alone due to the implant having a matching strength to that of the natural ACL. This means it is not necessary to sacrifice patient’s own tissue in the repair; using patient tissue leaves muscular deficiency and weakness leading to a slower recovery.

Speed

Surgery using JewelACL is simpler, faster, and more consistent. This means saving time in the operating theatre, which shortens the time the patient is under anaesthesia and the risks associated with that.

Versatility

The JewelACL can be used on it’s own, in combination with one hamstring, or in combination with two.

Because the JewelACL is made from a biologically safe material, the body does not reject the device

Because the device’s strength does not deteriorate, it is possible to commence earlier mobilisation of the operated leg, allowing weight bearing and a return to work and training for sport

The open weave structure of the JewelACL provides a lot of space for the body’s natural processes to colonise the device and integrate it with native tissue

Provided the implant experiences similar loads as those that the natural ACL experiences, the tissue colonising the implant matures and becomes aligned with the natural load bearing ligament tissue

Because the JewelACL has a matching strength to that of the natural ACL it can either be used alone or with a graft

The tubular structure of the JewelACL can accommodate one hamstring should the surgeon choose to combine the implant with a tissue graft for the reconstruction of a ruptured ACL (the tissue graft can be a patient’s own or an allograft)

How long until I return to normal?
The process of rehabilitation is dependent on the severity of your injury and should be discussed with your health care provider.
What can go wrong?
This procedure has common risks to other surgical procedures including those of ACL reconstruction.
  • Re-rupture of the implant in a second trauma
  • Infection leading to the removal of the implant
  • Limitation on knee range of movement, which can be due to a technical error
What is the rate of success of this operation?
                         

One of our surgeons has performed more than 1000 procedures over the past 11 years.

With autologous tissue the rate of rupture is 12.5% at five years after surgery.

In this surgeon’s series, the rate of rupture of the JewelACL is much lower at 4.8% at five to eight years after surgery, and 6% at 10 years after surgery.
