Pec Repair with Poly-Tapes

Reconstruction of the Pectoralis Major with 20 mm Poly-Tape

Watch

Pectoral Repair with 20 mm Poly-Tape - Surgical Technique Video

The pectoralis major tears are uncommon injuries; however, ruptures have become more prevalent in the past 20-years, attributed to an increase in recreational weight-lifting and sports participation.

Pec tears can be managed non-operatively; however, for patients who are active in the gym, performing movements such as bench pressing, there will be a noticeable weakness on the affected side. There can also be a significant cosmetic difference between the injured side and the non-injured side which tends to be unacceptable to those who train regularly in a gym.

For partial or full-thickness chronic tendon tears, the Poly-Tape 20 mm tape provides a suitable graft option to augment the repair.

Mr Fogerty has completed over 30 pec repairs using Poly-Tapes, with no known graft failures or any sign of graft pull-out from the bone. He has also seen no signs of infection, with all his patients returning to their chosen sport by the 6-month post-operation milestone, with normal or near normal levels of shoulder function.

The patient has a polysling for 6 weeks, but can do some gentle shoulder circumduction and flexion/extension during that time. It is also important to exercise the elbow to prevent stiffness. At 6 weeks, they can begin a rotator cuff repair-like regime with a shoulder physio. He prefers no direct load of the pec for 3 months post-surgery and no bench-pressing for 6 months. It is also preferable to stay away from collision sports for 6 months.
